I'm a curious, creative, Southern boy working in Anderson, SC. My corner of the internet is brought to life thanks to friendly cowboys at Eleven2 Hosting. If you're new here, you might be interested in the RSS Feed or Archives. You can say hello via .
well, OUTRAGEOUS THURSDAY™ was, once again, less than outrageous… but was wonderful in its restfulness, which is really what a day off is all about. slept in… glorious. did the address change thing at the post office, ordered new checks (sidenote: why do all check designs suck? they should let me design my own checks. now that would be awesome banking)… bought a cookie sheet and a few shirts, etc. i spent the rest of the afternoon hanging out with suz and chatting while seeing my sister’s house/shop in all it’s interior design goodness. my sister is a genius.
we also went and looked at a downtown loft that is owned by an acquaintance of suzanne’s. great place… makes me want to buy a building downtown right now… as opposed to the two year plan i know i need to be on so i’m out of debt completely before embarking on that journey. all things in good time.
pizza at jake and suz’s for dinner… papa john always treats me right. especially with ice cold coca-cola. late last night we went to clemson’s FCA. brown and some of the boys are leading worship for them next year, so this was their “debut.” they rocked. the speaker was less-than-lackluster. you win some, you lose some.
Greenville-Spartanburg Airport has free wifi. That’s what i’m talking about.
They also have ridiculously well-designed comfy chairs by the gates. They’re like something out of Design Within Reach. However, the cool points earned by the chairs are quickly offset by the hideous carpet under my feet and the bad weather-channel-esque piano jazz in my ears.
There’s a passenger airplane at the gate in front of me with propellers… a sign that your airport might be a bit smallish. My flight doesn’t leave for another hour. I have a two hour layover in Chicago. I forgot to take my gerber knife off my key ring. That was mistake #1. I didn’t realize that the tiny pliers on my key ring were apparently a potential weapon. That? You guessed it, mistake #2. So what do I get for this pair of mistakes? I get to go through the entire metal detector gauntlet twice. I also get the fantastic bonus option of mailing my knife and pliers to myself for the bargain price of $7. No… you get out… $3 change from a ten spot. Airports thrive on inflation.
There’s an interesting religious liberties case headed for the Supreme Court… interesting because it might set some new precedents for government interaction with religious freedom, and interesting because one of the plaintiffs is a guy named Daryl Blankenship who is all about ancient Nordic polytheism.
Sweet… my family tree has convicted felon distant relatives who think they’re vikings.
If I write it… I have to follow through on it, right? Right. Ok.
I put up a new splash page on hrtwrk.blogspot.com, but it’s really just a placeholder. For once in my life, i’m going to put Valentine’s Day to good use and launch www.hrtwrk.com on 02.14.05… overflowing with portfolio work and such. Hopefully, i’ll have enough time to move the blog that you have come to know and love over to www.yourcreativitydollarsatwork.com and also get some sort of simple layout up at www.joshuablankenship.com with the music side of things, too. Hopefully.
If I write it… I have to follow through on it, right?
Two words… dog judo.
In other news… the new Dizzie Rascal video is dang amazing. In an odd, desaturated Mr. Rogers sort of way.
Up until today, I used to get daily Dilbert via email thanks to comics.com. I unsubscribed because, honestly, even though I love the funny, I have enough cynicism in my life without inviting it into my inbox everyday.
Welcome to the 12th major redesign of the site. What can I say… I got bored. (I also chipped a tooth eating a freaking CHICKEN SANDWICH today…. but that’s another story.)
I just realized that our office is closed Wednesday-Friday. This means that starting on Wednesday, I have five consecutive days off. That’s vacation material… as in get-out-of-town vacation material. I wish I would have realized this a bit earlier. There are times when the fact that I am not a natural planner is not a good thing.
I bought a $60 pillow last night. I think this means i’m a grown-up.
Merry Christmas, faithful readers.
Much laughter (and a higher-than-normal share of tears) was shared with the fam this year. My Christmas schwag was great as usual, though definitely on both ends of the spectrum… either ridiculously manly or somewhat domestic and questionable. (Things like a new ax… and a sewing machine. Flannel sheets… and a chenille throw.)
The two highlights of this year both involve my wonderful sister. The first being her gift from me… tickets for her and her husband to the Motley Crue Reunion Tour. (Rock.) The second being her spelling out “gloves” in the sentence “…this stocking has some g-l-o-v-e-s in it… who does it go to?” in a room where no one was under the age of 25 or unable to spell. Hysterical. I love my family.
Ah… i’m fat and happy and ready for my nap.
…all I can think about is sugar plums.
The best rendition of O Holy Night in the history of the world. Ever. (For serious.)
Our staff went bowling yesterday for Staff Fun Day™ and i’m sore today. That’s just sad. I’m sore from four mediocre games of bowling. I’m so athletic. And by “athletic” I actually mean “pathetic.” Similar words… only completely not.
Matt updated Ninja Cruise awhile back with more tasty work. I just forgot to link it. Here’s some amazing photos of the Tokyo sewer system. Yes, amazing… sewer… just trust me, ok? For all you travelers, Map24 kicks Mapquest’s butt. Not that kicking Mapquest’s butt is all that difficult, but it’s nice to have a decent alternative. In other news, “oy” is just “yo” spelled backwards.
One of our wonderful New Spring volunteers, Joe Hall, dropped off his demo to Mcd this week. Hilarity ensued. I present to you the first in a series of six downloadable mp3s from the demo album Joe Hall Sings the Classics.
Yesterday was one of the best 24 hours in recent memory. The abridged version? OK… in short… it was magazine day, which means I received ID, Step (great interview with the guys from Aesthetic Apparatus), my first issue of The Royal (which remains… the best magazine on Earth), and my last issue of Entertainment Weekly (don’t hate on EW… it was a free subscription and this week there’s a massively great article by one of Seinfeld’s writers about life as a sitcom writer. It’s laugh out loud brutal sarcasm funny… “borrow” it from a doctor’s office or something and check it out.) Netflix brought me Dream of a Warrior, which was just plain not good, but then Netflix redeemed itself by also bringing me DJ Shadow’s live dvd In Tune and On Time… which was amazing musically and visually, as well as featuring a set of Shadow, DJ NuMark and Cut Chemist doing their thing on samplers. Ridiculous awesomeness. I talked to my friend Hope for a bit, which is always enjoyable. (Don’t read into that.) I ordered Chinese take-out and finally got a decent fortune… something along the lines of “Your season of boredom is over. New adventures are right around the corner.” Dang skippy it is… and dang skippy they are.
Oh… and did I mention I got a raise?
Today I wore a white and pink bunny suit on a golf course for a Christmas Eve New Spring video. That was pretty good, too… but not as good as yesterday.
Just plain weird. I’m speechless.
The Nicest Creative-types I’ve Met Online in 2004:
1. Ryan Sims - Justwatchthesky / Neubix Studios
2. Jeremy Cowart - Pixelgrazer / jeremycowart.com
3. Lee Gilmore - Lantern Waste Company
4. Joshua Smith - Hydro74
5. Chuck Anderson - No Pattern / NP&CO.
They all just happen to be insanely talented. (And really, really, really, ridiculously good-looking.)
Happy Monday. Lee Gilmore has a nice mix of friend’s music called A Family Affair for download. Good stuff. Check it out. Free music.
The always enjoyable (and free) Lounge 72 Calendar is up including work by nice folks like Chuck Anderson and Joshua Smith and Jemma Gura. Um… did I mention that it’s completely free?
I know I haven’t mentioned any [Insert Movie Title Here] in 30 seconds and Re-inacted By Bunnies links lately… but they have some Christmas joy for you… and some other funny stuff.
In other news: I cannot be trusted to wake up early in the morning for anything. It drives me crazy. Grrrr.
On a better note, I got to spend a couple of hours last night catching up with my best friend from childhood, Kylie Thompson (now Kylie Kuykendall). Great times. It’s still hard to believe that both of us work for churches (she and her husband are at London Bridge in Virginia Beach and i’m at New Spring), especially considering that we were both so foreign-missions-minded growing up. Life is quirky.
But dang… life is good.
