I’m off to Atlanta tonight to see Susan Tedeschi and the Derek Trucks Band at the Variety Playhouse. Rock and roll.
I had lunch with fellow Whiskerino 2005 participant Scott Neas during a brief Goodwill Tour stop in Nooga. You can see a few photos on Flickr. I must make special mention of Scott’s amazing vanity license plate.
[Stevie Nicks music plays over the office speakers]
Dwayne: “This sounds like something you’d hear at the dentist’s office… right after Jimmy Buffet.”
Me: “That is the PERFECT description.”
The differences in how men and women use the internet.
Matthew Spiegelman‘s photography portfolio has a nice Flash light-table-style interface, but I can’t help thinking of the WeFail style of sites (like Matthew Mahon) which are just a better overall experience using the same idea.
Dale Chihuly is the artist responsible for the amazing lobby ceiling installation at the Bellagio (that’s Terry Benedict’s place) in Las Vegas. I saw it in person last year and was completely captivated.
MyHeritage has a fun little face recognition demo where you upload a photo and then it (supposedly) scans the database and tells you what celebrities you resemble. In order, my first five were: Sid Vicious, Scarlett Johanson, Charles De Gaulle (!), Jennifer Connelly, and a young Michael Caine. I think their program is broken.
Russian Blog tells us how to drink vodka and stay sober. (Which, from my perspective, seems relatively pointless, but makes for a good how-to read nonetheless.)
This Sony Bravia commerical is absolutely beautiful. I love the concept, the cinematography, and the perfect song from José González, who’s wonderful and you should listen to. I don’t know enough adjectives to describe how much I love this and how inspiring it is. (Making of details and videos are here.)
My first forays into webdesign and blogging occurred on Blogger because it was free and fairly easy to use/misuse. And while I have long since abandoned it for greener pastures (albeit pastures with their own brand on coding/structure frustrations and woes), I find it humorous that if you misspell their url, you get a special treat:
If you decide to visit Lee‘s blog (or any Blogger site) and mistakenly type “leemcderment.blogpsot.com” (switching the s and the p) you go here via a sneaky javascript redirect.
Strange.
A few days late, but who doesn’t love a photo gallery of children being scared by Santa?
Mute Math seems to be circumventing their record label woes and are simply selling their full length album at shows. They won’t be in the southeast until March-ish, so if any of you Left Coast folks are going to a show and can pick me up a copy of the album, let me know. Thank you kindly!
Typographica lists their favorite fonts of 2005. The italic weight of Deréon is dang pretty.
Cin-O-Matic says it provides “a lot of information about a lot of movies in an easily scannable, filterable, and sortable format.” I say for a movie buff like myself, I like knowing what’s in theaters, on dvd, and soon-to-be released… so I love this.
Since I know you care, Kevin Federline’s new website is up. He’s a rapper, did you know that? (And if that’s not enough for you, he is, of course, on MySpace as well.)
I finished Velvet Elvis last night (quick read) and i’m curious to know what anyone else who has read it thought.
The federal chief of AIDS research says he believes drug companies don’t have an incentive to create a vaccine for the HIV. The International AIDS Vaccines Initiative estimates total annual spending on an AIDS vaccine is $682 million, “[which] represents less than 1% of total spending on all health product development.”
I bought my parents a Mac Mini for Christmas. It’s snazzy and darn cute.
I started reading Rob Bell’s Velvet Elvis last night and I can see why so many well-meaning, sincere Christians are upset by it and the implications they might draw from it (i.e. “no one can rock the boat of my Christian theology or they are evil” or something like that)… but I also enjoy the different worldview and interpretation of many of the tenants of Christian faith that Bell is discussing. I think the criticism can be close-minded and more based in cultural context issues than potential heresies. Just my two cents.
I might buy a Canon Rebel EOS 300D from a local photographer. Anybody used one? Thoughts?
I am currently addicted to Country Time Pink Lemonade. I let some marinate towards potency in the fridge over the weekend and let me tell you IT STINGS THE NOSTRILS.
I learned that the way I usually tie a tie is called a Four-In-Hand knot. (Handy website.) I need to learn the full and half Windsor knots.
I’m going shopping for furniture and lighting at Ikea soon with all my gift cards I got for Christmas. Thanks, friends and family.
I like the band Muse in a ridiculous adoration sort of way and I can’t stop listening to their cover of Feeling Good (mp3), a tune I grew up loving when I heard Nina Simone sing it.
I think that if you bought the book Adventures from the Technology Underground: Catapults, Pulsejets, Rail Guns, Flamethrowers, Tesla Coils, Air Cannons, and the Garage Warriors Who Love Them you would most likely be put on some sort of a government list that would entail non-fun stripping/searching activites every time you try to get on an airplane. That being said, what a coffee table book, eh?
I’ve seen some flexible people before, but this video is downright amazing.
