Dear Comcast,

Mon 06/05/06

You are (apparently) an “internet service provider.” In other words, there is this wonderful resource called the internet, and you provide the service of connecting me to it (for an outrageous fee that only a monopoly could get away with, of course.) The problem is, lately (always) you seem to have this “2 out of 3 ain’t bad” mentality. For instance, typically when I have an issue with you, you simply decide to become an “internet provider” (sort of) and the missing service comes in the form of irritable, unhelpful employees and phone trees so complex I started mapping one out one time while I was being bounced back and forth on hold and eventually just gave up when I RAN OUT OF ROOM ON THE PIECE OF PAPER.This weekend, specifically, you decided to ditch the “internet” part of your duties, and let’s be honest… that’s sort of the most important part.3 out of 3 please,JoshuaP.S. Luckily, due to your weekend of lacking merit, hack director Brett Ratner narrowly avoided getting today’s letter sent to him, expressing how badly X-Men 3 WAS THE VERY DEFINITION OF SUCK.

  1. I echo your sentiments. Here in north Florida, Comcast also happens to be the cable monopoly, and they also act as an “internet provider,” (sans the ‘service’) but only because they want more money. They offer the internet, somewhat, if you can stand their unbearably slow (for broadband) speeds. They also seem to like to have their fiber lines cut, which in turn “disrupts” service to the ENTIRE REGION.

Makes me want to get DSL.

  2. Anthony

I’ll give you the ISP thing, but I demand that you take back that X3 was that bad.

    It wasnt!

    FURY GUN LAZERS, GO!!!

  3. X3 was a steaming pile of cinema poo.

  4. Anthony

    Maybe.

    Except it wasn’t.

The scene in Jean’s house alone was worth the price of admission.

Beast was well done, better than I had hoped. They even snuck in an “Oh my stars and garters”. I smile.

The Dark Phoenix change in Jean was nice, not too over the top (flaming bird of death), but pronounced enough to be good and creepy.

Logan, wading through the TK storm while healing. Nice.

Better than 1, but lesser than 2.

    Accept it.

  5. I’m with you on the Comcast thing. I just made the switch to DSL this weekend after a couple of months of sporadic (at best) service. I’m not a cable tv customer so I was paying through the nose for the service.

DSL wasn’t available at my number until recently, and now I am getting similar;y rated speeds for about half of what I was paying before.

    And I still haven’t seen X-Men 2 or 3 yet. Some comic-nerd I turned out to be.

X3 sucked, for sure. I was very disappointed.

  7. X3 wasn’t THAT bad, considering I went in there expecting what I got from X1 and X2. Both of those were mediocre movies and so was this one. I was entertained, and that is what I paid for. No, this movie will not win any kind of cinematic awards, but that is not what they make X-Men movies for. They make ‘em for the kids.

I did think it was rather cheesy to have Juggernaut quote a line from an internet-popular voiceover of an X-Men cartoon episode. Anybody else catch the whole “I’m the Juggernaut b*tch!” line?

  8. Eh, I thought X3 was an entertaining ride…

  9. In comparison to X2, which was ripe with quality storytelling, character development, well-shot scenes, and a decent plot (not to mention being in keeping with the actual characters), X3 pure peepeecaca and no one can convince me otherwise.

  10. X3 felt like the moviegoing equivalent of opening three years worth of X-men comics to random pages and arranging them on the floor in random order and then reading them backwards.

I kept expecting Magneto to say something about the Chalice.

  11. Anthony

    pure peepeecaca? Nothing redeeming whatsoever?

Thats a tall claim, mr moviehater.

  12. since you and i share some of the same cinematic tastes do you think i will absolutely hate it? i did love the 2nd one so. i’m afraid i care too much about the characters (minus storm) to see what the ratner did to them. does it even get close to being bad good or just bad frustrating.

on a side note i did a double feature of The 13th Warrior and King Arthur. I highly suggest that combo. i felt like impregnating a thousand women and and laying waste to small villages afterwards.

  13. I’m not a comic book freak. There were a few childhood things I missed growing up. Comics were one of them.. Except Garfield. I enjoyed that.

Needless to say, I think all 3 X-Men are good for what they are. It’s obviously highly fiction, but I think it’s the best series out there so far. The early Supermans were amazing. The new one makes me a bit iffy on. Batman Begins is definitely the best Batman movie. While it’s not exactly what the comic displays (see: rocket car vs. rocket tank,) it’s the best directed, darker, more realistic, etc. Spiderman, when the first one came out, I was all for it.. The second one was okay, but it had some of the world’s most cheesy scenes ever shot (re: MJ running out of the church with oldies music playing; Spidey content with his powers being gone walking outside while “Blue Skies” is playing in the background.)

    So far, I’m thinking this:
    1. Superman (Chris Reeves)
    2. Batman Begins
    2.5 or 3.5 – Batman & Batman Returns
    3. X-Men (1, 2 and 3 are on the same level with me)
    4. Spiderman
    5. Batman Forever & Batman and Robin

.. Those are of the ones I have seen. I know that there are others (Daredevil, Fantastic Four, Ghost Rider, etc.)

If you consider V for Vendetta, move that to oh.. I don’t know.. the number 2 spot? Maybe.

  14. Vendetta kicked a llama’s ass. Your life is less meaningful for having seen Batman 3&4, as is mine. i still have a sweet spot for michael keaton’s batman as to me he seemed the most internally conflicted and messed up. superman, the character as a whole, is lame city.

  15. ha ha..
yeah, i think keaton’s job was the best under the reign of tim burton, but i must say, i think i like Batman Begins much better.. though, one of the best villains ever will be jack nicholson’s joker.

and superman, as a character, is quite lame.. that is agreed, but the original movies were quite astonishing when they came out and can still be viewed as bueno.

and i second your “Vendetta kicked a llama’s ass.” comment.

Lee Gilmore, i must say, you grow a mean beard and take pretty pictures. Via Shua and Whiskerino, I have become an un-formerly-introduced fan of the general.

    peace, fellas.

  16. i dont appreciate the curator of this “blog” changing my user name when i post. it’s really really uncalled for, completely un-Christ-like and void of the beatitudes.

zach, you will recieve your The General’s Girls fanclub newsletter soon.

i daresay batman will never see a villan as great as the jack’s joker again. i was quite relieved that BBegins was able to pull off the two villan angle better than the other bman movies. it doesnt hurt that, minus Fake Mrs.Cruise, BB’s casting was only second to none behind the potter movies. joker he isnt, but put liam neeson in a snow setting and my heart just mealts. aka the winter ballstomp scene in Kingdom of Heaven.

I heard rumors once that crispin glover was being considered for the joker. that is just too good to be true. i think he could nail the psychosis, but might like that human touch. then again i guess the joker doesnt really have that to begin with as all ive ever read him in he’s been quite cold.

i hope they never redo catwoman, becuase pfeiffer owned that top to bottom. that suit is engraved into my mind right next to stephanie seymour’s Victoria Secret catalogs,

  17. “That’s so void of the beatitudes” is now going to be my new favorite putdown.

  18. Lee, I’m only responding to your slanderous naming schemes. You were the beatitude-voider first. I’m the one being persecuted here, so I will obviously be blessed. Why is blog in quotes? Do think this isn’t really a blog, only a “blog?” That hurts my feelings.

Also, Blankenlips is hysterical, so it stays.

The first two Batman movies were terrible. Tim Burton should never have been allowed to touch those movies, as his vision was more Pee Wee’s Big Adventure than in keeping with the actual Batman mythos. (NOT that I don’t love Pee Wee’s Big Adventure.) Obviously, the 3rd and 4th installment were wretched and if you argue with me on that point, I’m fairly sure your movie-watching rights should be revoked until you wise up.

Crispin Glover as Joker would be splendid casting.

  19. Shua, considering your comments, I’m wondering why you aren’t a movie producer by now. You have a great eye for film (both cinematography and photography + what’s good acting and not,) yet you are highly critical of what has come out thusly. I want to pay $8.50 to see a movie of yours in the AMC 24 soon. Please?

Shua and the kickass of his working coming to a theatre near you!

    Do it, man!

.. and now i must leave you to go see The Omen because while it is a remake and i haven’t seen the original, I haven’t seen a horror flick in years + Julia Styles is definitely one of the better actresses in her generation.

  20. zachery, your comments about julie stiles pretty much revokes any chance you had at being a member of the The General’s fan club. 1. She has a flat face 2. she’s not THAT good of an actress (though most in her generation arent to begin with) 3. her voice is lower than Worf’s

can someone please tell me where the heck you can still see a movie for $8.50? i thought those places only existed in myth.

blankenlips, i might agree that batman 2 was not as strong as 1. but calling batman 1 ‘terrible’ is uncalled for. you’re probably one of those kids that liked Me, You, and Everyone We Know arent you?

blankenlips doesn’t have enough std’s to be a hollywood producer

  21. I rewatched Batman 1 a few months ago. It… is… bad. Not good. Etc.

I paid $16 for two movie tickets in lovely Chattanooga just this weekend. Of course, being from small town SC, I thought “Dang, when did movies get so expensive?”

You have obviously been away from the south for too long, Gilmore.

  22. it is $14 at the Arclight in town, which is one of only three theaters worth going to.

  23. James

I see movies for $5.00. It’s amazing. We have two super nice five to sixth year old stadium theaters here. One of them offers $5 movies from 4-6pm.

Zach, today I’m seeing The Omen, too.

  24. I see movies for $3.50 and anytime of day or night I want. Tomball’s Cinema 6 is quite the place to go. However, drive to The Woodlands and you’ll pay $4.50 (first showing), $6.50 (students or afternoon showings), and $8.50 (everyone else or showings after 6pm).

I was on my way to see The Omen for $3.50, but then my friend, Evan, called me to tell me he would have to post-pone ’til tomorrow. So, tomorrow I will be seeing The Omen.

And I again say, Julia Stiles is definitely one of the BETTER actresses in HER generation.
    1981 saw these born:
    -Julia Stiles
    -Jessica Alba
-Natalie Portman (is the best of this list)
    -Beyonce
    -Paris Hilton
    -Nichole Richie

    .. I rest my case.

  25. julie stiles STILL sounds like worf. she is not as annoying as mena savari who i often get confused with her. you’re into klingons arent you zach? and no, jessica alba cannot act but there is definitely a reason she was put on this earth.

  26. actually, startrek was never my thing, lee. ;) thanks though!
and i can’t say that i would choose jessica alba over julia.
.. but hey, we all have different tastes and that is a cool thing.
when choosing pizza at a buffet, i don’t want to share my hawaiian pizza w/ you which is why you probably are a big fan of.. pepperoni? .. i’m just guessing. if you like hawaiian, though, i suppose i will share with the General. ;)

  27. hmm, you see into the inner workings of my soul. my allegiance lies with pepperoni yes, but i go into the occasional spurt of hawaiian. you and i will just have to disagree on stiles v. alba. stiles more times than not has squeezed he-man head, while j.alba comes equipped with this in her arsenal.

  28. ha ha..
and then we come back to the flat face comment.
    see?

  29. wow. you got me on that one. that doesnt even look like her. that was an amazing amazing movie by the way. it kept dipping in and out of being bad bad to bad rad.

  30. Where did this thread go so horribly wrong/right?

I love that approximately three comments have actually been about Comcast.

  31. this movie made me want to kill myself. mainly because of the TSF (the stiles factor) but also cause of cave troll dunst and her “tsst, uh, but….tssttt. come on whatever” cadence

  32. I haven’t seen the movie, but I have heard that it was lame.
And I will agree with you on Dunst…
I think I MIGHT have had a crush on her when i was a youngin’, but now as I look back, all I can say is.. “What was I thinking?”

.. Can we agree on Rachel McAdams being attractive and a good actress?
Or does she not meet the General’s standard?

  33. Anthony

    Julia Stiles = Booooring.
Zach = President of the Blankencrips, a Fan Club.

  34. rachel mcadams is the best, best, best ever.

  35. Finally.. an agreement.
