Dr. Redesign (or) How I Learned To Love the Grid

I’m doing a little redesigning here today… finally getting around to transferring the blog to the new 2-column and 3-column layouts I’ve been implementing on the subpages. Pardon my mess.

I’m having a blast seeing what kind of web layouts I can pull off using text, CSS, and PHP with no images. It’s quite the challenge to make it all work visually and still be aesthetically pleasing. A constant work in progress.

P.S. I ditched the javascript show and hide navigation at the tops of the pages. I Just didn’t like the way it behaved when new pages loaded in. Everything that was in the header is now in the footer, so just click “Site Navigation” to jump to it and find your way around.

P.P.S. If you don’t have the typeface Myriad, you’re really missing out because it makes all the typography on here look a billion times better. I hate typography on the web… so few options.

I’m glad you dropped the javascript. It was kindof annoying…

*A note on my tone in that last post. I was smiling and it was jokes. My voice gave an inflection of jest.

    Haha.

Dwayne was working on a little Javascript snippet that would do the same thing, only with a sort of time release on it that might cure the annoying flicker. We’ll see.

Ok, the new layout *seems* to be well for now, though I haven’t tested anything in IE yet, so if you still use that devil browser and things look odd, let that be further reason for you to switch to Firefox.

I’ll tackle the archives, search functionality, and a few styling and proper coding things eventually. But for now, I have more to pack for this weekends moving festivities.

With the new colour scheme, this place is slowly starting to look like mine! ;)

Yeah, it’s a 900px grid, and I’ve thought of shaving it down a bit. (Sometimes it’s easy to forget that my monitor is a tad on the huge side of things.)

I love the new look. The single column I must say was on its way out.

I heard ems are nice for internet typography. That way you could size up or down depending on your resolution.

This matches ems to px, so it’s easy to tell how big your type will be:

    BODY {font-size:62.5%}

    So in other words..

1em is now equal to 10px
1.2em would be equal to 12px
0.9em would be equal to 9px

    ..and so on.

Might be a good thing, might not. :)

I was mainly talking about the type size. I get maybe 2 posts on my screen now.

You could always jack Shaun Inman’s code for his “Navigate/Search” show/hide. That auto-scroll to the bottom of the page is a little intense.
