We’re off to explore the Boston Institute of Contemporary Art today. Don’t you love their logo?

More-detailed information on the Nikon D3 from Rob Galbraith. (ISO 25,600?)
Nikon has announced their first full-frame D3 DLSR for right at $5000. As I’ve said in the past, I love Canon products, but the fact that the lenses are so dang expensive makes Nikon much more attractive to me.
I’m not here to insult anybody, sir. I’m just here to race.

The Mrs. and I took in a screening of The King of Kong: Fistful of Quarters last night (thanks to Ain’t It Cool and Quint) and it was hysterically, wonderfully amazing. It’s the story of two very different men vying for the world record score on Donkey Kong. I can’t recommend it enough.
I’ve finally started coding a redesign for this here blog. I hope this doesn’t take too long, but I sure do like it.
30 minute performance from multi-instrumentalists Amína, who often pull double duty for Sigur Rós as their opening band and string section. Pretty music.
Quote, “Ideas fly like left jabs and connect like right hooks.” DraftFCB‘s Creative Rumble is like idea Fight Club, only much less interesting and simply proof that the advertising industry is so in love with itself. Someone’s title there is “Global Creative Director”? Are you kidding me? (via Adscam)
Crushingly beautiful trailer for the Sigur Rós documentary Heima. Amazing.
To design is to communicate clearly by whatever means you can control or master.

The emotional/mood side of knowing when to ask for a raise
Why the Bourne Series is the Best American Film Trilogy Ever Made. The writer makes a decently compelling argument; I don’t necessarily agree with him, but it’s a fine argument nonetheless. (And if you haven’t seen The Bourne Ultimatum yet, it’s dang good.)
Quote, “By today’s rules, I can carry on liquids in quantities of three ounces or less, unless they’re in larger bottles. But I can carry on multiple three-ounce bottles. Or a single larger bottle with a non-prescription medicine label, like contact lens fluid. It all has to fit inside a one-quart plastic bag, except for that large bottle of contact lens fluid. And if you confiscate my liquids, you’re going to toss them into a large pile right next to the screening station—which you would never do if anyone thought they were actually dangerous. Can you please convince me there’s not an Office for Annoying Air Travelers making this sort of stuff up?”
Bruce Schneier interview with Kip Hawley, the head of the Transportation Security Administration.
Statetris – it’s like Tetris, only with the USA. Pretty fantastic idea for teaching people American geography (and not just kids – I admit it took me almost 4 minutes, due in part to narrowly missing the correct drop points and in part to my lack of geo-knowledge of the midwest.)
Nice illustration work from Andrew Neyer, including some easy-on-the-wallet items like hats and shirts and a ‘zine/poster. I love Grizzly Whiff.
Tips on staying (creatively) motivated from Kevin Cornell on A List Apart.
How to tie the perfect tie every time (aka how to tie a perfectly good Windsor Knot.) It uses more material than the typical four-in-hand, but it looks so much better – more symmetrical and fuller.
We’re moving into what I call the era of the “Casual Web” (and casual content creation). This is much bigger than the hobbyist web or the professional web. Why? Because people have lives. And now, people with lives also have broadband. If you want to hit the really big home runs, create services that fit in with—and, indeed, help—people’s everyday lives without requiring lots of commitment or identity change. Flickr enables personal publishing among millions of folks who would never consider themselves personal publishers—they’re just sharing pictures with friends and family, a casual activity. Casual games are huge.

After far too long without a point-and-shoot (or anything to shoot video with) I am pleased that Canon is releasing the PowerShot G9 on October 15. It’ll be nice to have a daily camera again.
