In an attempt to be a better steward and tree hugger and grower of plants while still being an apartment-bound dweller, I did some research into composting today and even managed to find a few resources on apartment and otherwise indoor composting.
Composting is an excellent move. You might also be interested in researching Pea Patches in the Boston area. Maybe they have different names for them there, but essentially they are community gardens where plots can be rented for about $30 a year, give or take. I’m in the process of getting a 10′x 15′plot to grow vegetables for myself and for others. It is definitely a move in a Genesis direction.
On a side note, the house I recently “moved into” on Capital Hill has a rather expansive garden in the backyard, and right now I happen to be laying my head next to large watermelons each night.

My BFF is a hardcore botanist. He even graduated college with about 150 degrees in the subject. He’s always growing crazy stuff. He swears by the products made by the little company that could, TerraCycle, Inc.
The company was started by a bunch of college buddies which should make you buy it just on merit. They use only recycled ingredients and containers. It’s such an awesome idea. But, leave it up to big business to fuck everything up. They have been sued by Scotts. This story is just absolutely ridiculous and I expect further blog posts about this hypocrisy. TerraCycle manufactures all-natural garden products by feeding organic waste to worms and bottling the resulting worm poop compost tea as ready-to use plant food in soda bottles collected by schools and other charities across North America.
This may not be up your alley since your trying to fertilize your own plants, but if you choose not to these dudes seem like the way to go. Again, I expect further updates about this story, it’s such bullshit. It’s like Wal-Mart suing Dollar General.

i was going to suggest vermicomposting, but i see that is covered in a link you posted.
also, i’m not sure of what your hippification level is, but let me tell you it is a slippery slope. next thing you know you’ll be using cloth tp.
there is great pleasure in returning to a simpler, greener, more sustainable way of living.
