If you don’t have $$$$, you’re forced to find friends…Network-building beats $$$$…Money fosters bloat, waste, [and] complacency. It’s the enemy of resourcefulness, grit, [and] drive. Hunger (of all kinds) is the great motivator.
— Tom Peters, The Brand You 50
I don’t wholeheartedly agree with that. You got’s to have money to live. If you got no green you quickly run out of friends:
“Hey man, I’m down on my luck, you mind if I crash on your couch?”
“No problem, anything for a friend.”
Hard cut to three months later:
“Get the fuck off my couch!”
“I thought you said, ‘Anything for a friend.’”
“We stopped being friends two months ago after your back sweat stained the couch and you ate all my chicken noodle soup.”
If you come from humble means money doesn’t foster anything but more resourcefulness, self-respect and self-worth. His point negates itself. He doesn’t believe in money yet he believes in networking to “get motivated”. get motivated for what? Being broke? No. To get successful. So he really means what I meant. Be smart with you money and don’t buy dumb shit. If anyones complacent it’s people without money.
