Hugh MacLeod on How Creative People Like Their Own

Thu 01/10/08

Creative people like other creative people, even if they’re far more senior than you. The great thing about creative people with power and money, is that they would much rather have somebody working for them who reminds them of themselves when [they were young]…if you ever meet an older “Creative” like that, don’t be scared of her. Don’t be scared to seek her out. She’s probably just as delighted to have found someone she can give a real opportunity to, as you are for finding someone offering a real opportunity.

  1. I’ve watched this play out a lot in the places I’ve worked over the past six years, particularly in my stint at TM Advertising. Seek put, pursue, and build relationships with like-minded people. The value well outweighs the risk.

  2. Very true. I’ve been helped by many. You get what you give, I suppose.

  3. This reminds me a lot of your one (and only) post from So Serious about the influence of proximity. I guess I see this quote as nicely augmenting that idea.

  4. Agreed, though I think there’s a whole other article for So Serious relating just to this concept.

  5. And is that forthcoming? :-)

  6. SO very true. I’m not sure where I am on this continuum now though. I know I LOVE to talk with others about ideas, give input or help or advice. I guess I’m not “young”, so I suppose I’m a senior … Poop.

  7. True dat. (Aside: I had the pleasure of having lunch w/ Hugh a couple months back… nice guy.)

  8. (senior == i’m old enough to know that i’m never going to be the best, and that sharing knowledge and a bond with a person is far more lasting than a piece of work)
