Wow, really?! I know Boyd Tinsley’s solo album was a (laughable) bust and sometimes his solo’s can go on for a little TOO long, but he still adds a great dimension and great depth to The Dave Matthews Band.
Are you kidding me? I can’t get enough of his solo in “Lie in Our Graves.” If it wasn’t for Boyd Tinsley, the music wouldn’t be half as awesome as it is. But then again, I’m sure you have something against Dave Matthews as a whole, too.

No, I honestly don’t. I could like a lot of their music if not for the Boyd. He adds nothing that I would miss if it were gone. Butch Taylor MORE than covers anything that fiddle adds, melodically or dynamically.
c’mon, incessant sawing 16th notes album after album? How can that be a bad thing? oh, wait…
Really though, I wonder about the better tunes in the past would be remembered without fiddle. And who would wear the leather pants and transparent shirts if not Boyd?
I’ve gone back and forth. I’ve been a huge fan since ‘92. Boyd is great _to_watch_ at shows. I’ve had friends that can’t stand his playing and think the band would be much better without him. I’ve defended him for years. As of late, I have become sufficiently annoyed with his off-key, non-creative, redundant playing. i turned on a live album the other day, and actually got pissed at how bad it was.
That said, Butch Taylor is a genius. And as of late, Rashawn Ross has been kickin’ it with the trumpet. The guy’s brilliant, and I’d love to see him replace Boyd. i fear, though, he will never be replaced.
The thing that gets me is that they are all fairly sic musicians. How/why/wtf do they continue to let it happen? Of course, his playing on albums (esp Before These Crowded Streets) is great, but Steve Lillywhite is responsible for his tasteful appearances here and there, instead of the “incessant sawing’ (nice one, @grk) we get punished with at live shows. I sometimes wonder if Dave/Carter/the rest of them ever get pissed and say anything. do they not hear it? if not on stage, do they listen to their live stuff at all? It baffles me.
@Joshua, I totally LOLed in in my office at your post. Cheers

Can’t wait to see them in Memphis in August.

Don’t forget, songs such as Two Step and Pig would be nothing without Boyd.

@grk
“Incessant sawing” was exactly the phrase I came here to post.
Carry on.

Haha - points well taken. But I still like me some transparent shirt-wearing Tinsley.

Stefan and Carter need to go on tour. Everything good about that band comes from the rhythm section. They are dirty.
Butch is solid though.
