Wal-Mart has a new logo. They do not, as of yet, have a specific reason for or explanation of said logo. I hope this isn’t an attempt to man-up to Target’s identity simplicity.
According to my wife, who watched NBC Nightly News tonight, the stated reason was to make the logo more (to paraphrase) “youthful, energetic, and friendly” or something like that.
I don’t know, but to me that’s like putting a bright and happy “Welcome!” sign in front of a smelting facility.
Walmart is vigorously attempting to shuck off the notion that their inventory is second-rate. In Kentucky they’ve implemented sweeping renovations to their retail section and bolstered quantities of wider-know brands (Levi’s, Joe Boxer, Starter, Bugle Boy, and a few other cool-kid brands of the 90s).
At the very least, the logo redesign indicates broader changes are coming to their website. At this point in time Walmart’s logo could be mocked up by a 3-year old and millions of people would still shop there every day (and in droves on Christmas Eve).
My first impression is the icon is a sun to go with the “Live better” part of the tag line to look more friendly and “eco-friendly” to change the “big retailer destroys your town” view they have.
It is already giving me the warm fuzzies… WALMART IS GOOD YOU CAN NOT RESIST.

I was hoping for something more along the lines of the Buy ‘n Large look.

I find it crazy that Lippincott got paid for that — probably 6 figures (or more). I wonder what other designs they presented …

You can’t see what the little yellow cannons are pointing at — it’s small town America.
Either that or it’s a butthole.
