Sarah Palin CBS Interview

Oh well, I thought about shying away from political commentary here, but it’s gotten so bizarre, I feel the need to at least poke it with a stick. Katie Couric interviews Sarah Palin on the current economic situation and it’s downright laughable how uninformed she is. And by “laughable” I of course mean “scary.” Do with that what you will.

Ummm… Huh? Never played golf in my life. Can’t stand flip flops, they hurt my toes. Do you have me confused with Todd Palin? Yeah, cause that’s what he’s doing with his time… Reading a second rate blog.

Oh, come now, Toddly. You and I both know I might have misjudged about the accessories, but the cargo shorts are dead on. Should I have instead said: visor and button-down? Toyota Highlander? Jesus loves SUV’s and Arctic Refuge drilling. He also like racist politicians who like guns and babies but doesn’t mind killing criminals.

Second rate, huh? So, because Blankenship points out how innately stupid Palin is, somehow his entire blog and content suffer? Are you a Nazi, Todd? Do differing opinions about politics and the state of the world scare and frighten you? You are the fuckin’ problem, champ. You are the person at the polls that knows he’s making the wrong decision, but who cares right? As long as their ain’t no Jesus hating nigger in the white house then it’s all good. Todd, I’m glad to have you reading, I’d love for you to continue to do so. I would love to be able to humbly provide some benefit to you and your church. I can’t speak for M.A.T. or any of my other commenters, but I can certainly speak to what I wrote.

I’m making a political commentary about that interview with Senator Palin. I’m not personally attacking her or maligning her character. I have no desire or motivation to do so. I’m voicing concern that a Vice Presidential nominee seems uninformed on the most major economic situation in the last 75 years of American history. I’m sure she’s a great lady on a personal level, but we’re talking about who will be second in the chain of command of the U.S. in a few months and I won’t shy away from voicing concern that she apparently has no grasp of the current situation or solutions for it.

    …a second rate blog.

    Now that’s just mean.

Is political commentary not social commentary?

And I’m sure I was better. I’ve been writing here for 5 years and someone is always telling me it was better at whatever point it was exactly what they wanted. I promise I tried to warn you, however cryptically. There’s only so long one can link pretty things before he actually wants to prompt conversation.

    said Joshua

That’s exactly your problem Josh…. when you spend the focus of your time commenting on fonts, church sites, and top 5’s and then take a pot shot at someone way more accomplished than you… it’s just comes across arrogant. Good luck with that.

said soon to be former reader

    at 2:59pm on Thursday

You might as well be saying “when you spend the focus of your time commenting on fonts, church sites, and top 5’s it gives you no right/authority to talk about anything other than those things” which just seems illogical to me. I’m trying my best to understand the current economic and political landscape so I can make an informed decision when I cast my vote. This is a part of that. Raising concerns is a part of that.

But I don’t understand why disagreeing with me on one topic, which you readily tell me I know nothing about, would make you stop reading a blog you’ve been reading for all the other content. Do you only take in content from people you absolutely agree with in every area?

    said Joshua

Criticizing the content of a person’s blog is equivalent to being invited to a person’s house and going off on how ugly the wallpaper is or how they really should redo their bathroom.

I find myself struggling to remember what the original content of this post was, or what Blankenship was trying to convey. It wasn’t my experience reading the post that Joshua took a shot at Gov. Palin, but rather was making an observation. How one interpreted his remarks, Joshua cannot control (nor do I believe he would want to). Todd’s, M.A.T.’s, and “former reader”’s (Salutaions, ambiguity!) comments say little about what Blankenship wrote and much, much more about themselves. I would have been much more interested in their actual thoughts regardin Palin and not their anger and bitterness toward Blankenship and each other.

    So,

it was frustrating and physically painful to watch Gov. Palin’s interview with Katie Couric. Her inability, or refusal, to answer the questions asked was telling. I try to have a good amount of sympathy for politicians, whose every action and comment gets observed and scrutinized, but Gov. Palin was not able to give concise responses that related to the questions. Yes, she was quite obviously nervous, as most people would be, but either was was not informed well by her campaign or she simply doesn’t know much about the economy or John McCain’s history as a politician.

I hope that her campaign actually lets her be a part of more interviews and gives her a chance to speak her voice. Either it is some form of sexism or they are scared of what she might say or not say.

Lastly, I like posts about colors and I like posts about politics.

    said Joshua Longbrake

    at 3:56pm on Thursday

Listen, this is not about me commenting on your right to speak… its commenting on your judgement. Your insinuation is that Palin is not educated or smart. I find that judgement funny coming from somone, who I think its safe to say, hasn’t walked in her shoes or attained her accomplishment. Your attacking her ability; a move which I find arrogantly misplaced being the context and focus your blog has taken. My understanding is you associate your name with your brand, which would entail your brand having now possibly alienated a portion of your audience. It’s not that can’t comment on any subject, its that is that comment benefical to your goal? But hey…. I have only recently found this blog and maybe I just read this all wrong. I was refered to this blog as an interesting take on the ideals of design. Apparently, it is design+ potshot evaluations of political figure’s capabilites. And before another “faithful reader” comes to your aid, I do realize I have made judgement of his judgement…. and I am ok with it.

said soon to be former reader

    at 4:19pm on Thursday

Your insinuation is that Palin is not educated or smart.

No, my insinuation is that she is uninformed on the current economic crisis, which I believe is exactly what I said in the original post. Uninformed is not the same thing as uneducated or unintelligent, it’s simply a lack of information. She was asked specific questions and she failed to answer them. I don’t think she’s dumb, I just think she doesn’t know the answers. Huge difference. She can learn the answers, and the situation, just as any politician has to do when they get elevated to a bigger political playing field. It’s just odd to me that she didn’t get prep-ed better prior to being on national television.

As for alienating audiences, I’m frankly shocked I have any sort of audience. For five years I’ve literally been writing about whatever interests me at the moment. Sometimes (a lot of the time) that’s design, sometimes it’s matters of faith, sometimes it’s food and right now, it’s one of the more important presidential races in recent memory. If you just want a design resource, this personal site is not the place to only find that.

As for it being arrogant to comment/question Palin, how can ANY of us make any commentary or ask questions about policy if the standard is for us to have the same level of experience?

    said Joshua

Dear “soon to be former reader”:

I wish you would use your real name.

Though, I can understand your choice not to, given that you do seem aware of how one’s comments and statements posted publicly on the internet do indeed take part in defining one’s brand & reputation.

    said Paul

    at 4:45pm on Thursday

Joshua, what particularly about her response revealed such ignorance in your mind?

    Great question, Shane.

When asked if she supported the $700bil bailout, her response was essentially “Americans are waiting to see what John McCain will do on this proposal” which isn’t an answer or a strategy.

When asked if she supported the moratorium on foreclosures, she gave a non-answer until Couric made it clear that she had no policy on it. When asked what are the pros and cons of the moratorium, she talked around it.

When asked for specific examples of McCain pushing for more regulation, she had no answer (other than the example that Couric cited earlier) and defaulted to the “McCain is a party maverick” line, which she couldn’t back up with fact.

    said Joshua

Point taken on your assertaiton of her as “uinformed” and I apologize if it comes accross as if I am saying that one must climb the levels in order to judge. My point is that not many people, including those running it, understand the current economic crisis. Why not comment on the solution yourself, rather than picking at someone; or better yet, inform yourself. Then start taking shots are the entire problem…. BOTH PARTIES. Are you going to point out that Obama has ties to Freddie Mac’s former CEO…. that to me is of as much or more concern. It just seems as if Palin, who isn’t even gonna be running the show, is taking the hits while others are more copable. It seems to me your just mocking… which is your “right”…. but maybe not prudent.

Joshua, I agree that she seemed undecided on what to say but I wonder how much of that is waiting for due process and more information. Is it fair to assume she’s heard all the pros and cons along with the complexity of the ramifications enough to cogently and succinctly articulate a satisfactory answer during an antagonistic interview; just because she’s running for VP? I politically lean Libertarian so I’m not defending her politics but I do cut some slack knowing how complex this situation is and given that even the brightest minds are struggling with it.

Anyway, good thoughts. Thanks for clarification.

    Hi Joshua,
Long time reader, first time commenter…

    1. This line is especially interesting, “I find that judgement funny coming from somone, who I think its safe to say, hasn’t walked in her shoes or attained her accomplishment.” So you’re saying before you judge someone you have had to do/participate in everything they’ve done? You know what…Vince Young is an awful quarterback. Wait, I can’t say what is basically “fact” because I’ve never put on football pads. I’m not entitled to have an opinion.

    2. The whole deal of leaving names like “former reader” is pretty played out. If you are so resolute in your convictions and beliefs, where’s the basic set of balls to admit to your real name and who you are? Are you afraid of retaliation you can’t handle? Or is it just easier to hide behind a fake name? The internet is awesome when it comes to things like that.

    3. A “potshot”? Really? What is your defense for her having no answers? What are we SUPPOSED to say to a video like that? The teleprompter wasn’t working like in the Obama video?

    4. Blankenship, I know you take great pride in your blog, readership, followers etc and you will no doubt spend more time dwelling on these comments than you should. Stop it. Cue up the Rammstein and know that you are loved.

    5. MAT, you are a loud mouthed dweeb. If you would take the time to logically, non-hatemonger-ishly, spout your obviously strong opinions in a more level headed manner I would not be so quick to scan over/ignore any twitter/comment/post that has MAT next to it. All that said I still love you and you left your toothbrush at my house.

As if “sound bite” politics shows you where a politician really stands. All that video said to me is “We have to get to the bottom of the problem.” If you want to know where a politician stands you have to look at their record. This is where Obamites say “Palin has no record” even though Obama’s record is like two seconds longer then hers.
So here’s your homework assignment people… Go look at Obama’s record (note the ACLU finds him further to the left than a socialist) and go look at Palin’s record, compare and contrast.
As for me, being the starving real estate agent that I am, I still wholeheartedly tell you, no, I don’t want a government “bailout”. Not a popular opinion with those around me in my profession, but I hold to it. If you’re out of cash, you don’t go to Money Tree - you’re just prolonging the problem and going further into debt… and what’s that they say “it’s not more debt it’s just inflation” - Trust me my friends if the “new” money wasn’t earned it has to be paid back.

So to sum it all up, Jay Z really did know what he was doing years ago when he invested in the Euro… er Gyro… er Europe dollars

On a serious note, let me explain this for the thousandth time: every comment on this blog from me is in jest. To get the fires roaring to spark conversation and slanderous jabs. Why? Because it is fun. If you really skip over my comments on this blog I completely understand. Twitter-skipping I don’t really understand. I usually don’t post that hatefully to Twitter (unless it’s about Republicans). Nor do I even post that much to Twitter in general (no pun, Lee).

One fix to avoid having to skip over my posts is to just delete me from your friend list on Twitter. It won’t upset me or make my self hatred level any higher. I will understand.

I’m not level headed when it comes to Republicans or “Christians”, you’re right, that’s why it’s so much fun to be “that guy” on this blog. Here’s to slander and diversity on the web! Dweeb 1 out!

After consideration, I think I owe an apology to you, Mr. Blakenship. I think I contributed to a “hijacking” of your blog or at least distracted from your point. If I did, that in itself is counter to my point. I think I expected to escape to your blog from the current press, and felt like that didn’t happen. That was my expectation and see that its probably not your goal.

I would agree to some point, that someone running for VP should be more readily able to answer policy questions. She seemed unable to do that… but in my opinion she seemed more scared than uninformed. As an “outsider” I hope that she is scared. My stance is simply, that many many people are to blame for the current economic crisis. The CEO’s who took unbelievably huge bonuses over this crisis are to blame. The politicians that protect and leave those CEO’s are to blame. The American public, who’s own greed led them to believe they needed a bigger house they couldn’t afford and lied on there application are to blame. The bank’s that lent to those borrowers are to blame…. and on and on. May be my hope was to see an “outsider” step in and say “Oh SH*T! This isn’t working!” Not that she is our savior… I just think cos she is a woman and not from Washington, she taking undo criticism. I think everyone involved should be held accountable…. not the scape goat. Blame Wall Street; blame Republicans; blame Democrats… just do it to everyone involved.

My apologies to General Lee, I won’t disclose my identity. Sorry if the name is not cute or original enough…. maybe you and your boyfriend MAT, who left his toothbrush at your house, can dream one up together. Joshua, occasional reader - first time commenter. Why must Palin be able to recall all of McCain-sponsored bills over the past couple decades and the media jump all over her when she doesn’t know? Biden somehow got a pass when he thought Roosevelt was president when the markets crashed in ‘29 and showed great leadership when he went on TV, which didn’t exist for another decade, to face the situation.

Can Biden remember what bills Obama sponsored? According to Biden in Dec, “Obama hasn’t passed any”; a blatantly false statement. But nobody seems to care that he’s woefully uninformed in some areas. Or that he slammed his own running mate for an ad about McCain’s inability to use a computer. How much press did that get?

Palin didn’t support or denounce the $700B bailout. So what? As of today, Friday, Obama hasn’t either. In fact, he did all he could do stay away from Washington and not have to take a stance on it until he got drug back by the administration. Come to think of it, he rarely takes a position on anything. “Somebody of [his] pay-grade isn’t qualified to decide when a person should be given human rights.” (Saddleback) Is that right, Mr. Obama? You’re running for the most powerful position in the world. Please, please, take a stance, AT LEAST, on who should be granted human rights. We might disagree with you, but take a stance. THAT could be the most troubling answer/issue of our times… not the economy. How much press did that get? Zero.

We all have areas of expertise. Hopefully we’ve got enough grace to look past relatively trite soundbite-length shortcomings and look at where they’ll benefit this great nation. The bias in the media is deafening.

I wholeheartedly agree on that. Don’t make the mistake of thinking that by calling Palin uninformed on the topic I’m saying “and the other guy obviously is awesome.” All I’m saying is “wow, in this interview, she didn’t have answers.”

In the same way, Biden, Obama and McCain have all not had answers to certain questions. But this video doesn’t feature them, it features Palin. And Palin comes across uninformed in this interview. That’s not bias, it’s simply talking about one thing at a time.

Why must Palin be able to recall all of McCain-sponsored bills over the past couple decades?

All? Unlikely. Some? That would be nice. I think if you’re going to say your running mate has a record of something, you should be able to at least back up that statement with an example or two. Otherwise it looks like you know nothing about your running mate, which is the sort of disconnect that is worrisome.

I guess it all boils down to expectations. Absolutely, she comes across uninformed and, sure, it would have been nice (in a purely benevolent way) for her to have been more prepared. But to me, the news around this clip relates more to exactly what you said: “But this video doesn’t feature them, it features Palin.” Exactly! Where are the equivalent clips of the other side, because they’re certainly not lacking in quantity, just in coverage.

The news of this clip is how much press it has received, not what she did or didn’t know. The clip is everywhere, and it’s very underwhelming. Katie Couric pressed her in some areas in which Palin obviously wasn’t prepared. Couric is also a very good reporter with a well documented left-leaning bias. Shocking that she was able to expose it. To me, that’s just not news.

Glad to be welcomed and always enjoy a spirited conversation.

Since when did we not find it acceptable for someone to express an opinion/observation on their own blog??? Since when did we get so caught up in ‘hating’ the system that we stopped being involved in it. When we give up our political voice, we give up our commitment to make it better…Whether you support Palin and the McCain camp or not has NOTHING to do with it. People can have healthy dissenting conversation. It makes us all a little bit better in the end. I personally do not know Joshua but I do not think that just because he posts something stating that Palin was uninformed in her interview is saying that he bashes all repbulicans everywhere and wishes they all burn in hell…which is what some of you are seemingly taking him to mean.

Chill out everyone…it’s gonna be ok.

@Gavin, among others, have you forgotten about the Jeremiah Wright controversy or Obama’s comments on small town America. Each campaign has received its fair share of the media storm that comes with misrepresented soundbites.
