The Atlantic Redesign

I’m enjoying The Atlantic’s redesign. What I’ve seen of the print version also looks lovely.

Why doesn’t the masthead of the site match that of the magazine? (*if you look at the current issue) The grid and layout is nice, but I really hate IMPACT, in any sense or usage (personal font-peeve).

I like the new logo, and the magazine cover looks awesome.

Not too crazy about the site. That’s a lot of black. Guess it’ll grow on me.

Paul, it’s actually Tilting Gothic, a typeface I really dig. Much more flexible, professional and extensible than Impact.

What do you like about the print version? I think the cover is lousy. The individual sections work ok by themselves but they don’t sing when they’re all put together. Also the placement of “Think.Again.” is awkward up there above the magazine title.

I haven’t experienced it in person yet, so I’m just going on the occasional images I’ve seen online so far. That being said, I feel like it’s a vast improvement over the stale former version, I like the typographic choices, I like the use of the nameplate’s A as a content divider, I like the sparse lefthand column and typographically chaotic righthand side of the cover (thought typographically-speaking, too many covers like that would just make me tune out from all the noise.)

It seems like it always takes a few months post-redesign for magazines to find their respective footing and start to have some fun within their new visual and typographic language. (I’m looking at you, BusinessWeek.) I want to see how they start incorporating photographic imagery and illustration, and see where it goes from here.
