iPhone/Beatmaker DJ Set on Vimeo

For our Christmas services at NewSpring Church, Ken Wilson made samples in Reason, loaded them into the iPhone app Beatmaker, and then we used them to “DJ” opening sets as everyone arrived to the service(s) at our campuses.

Ken and Daniel tagteamed it at our Anderson Campus. I was on at our Greenville Campus. I replaced a few of Ken’s original samples with some of my own (handclaps, Charlie Brown, George Carlin, etc.) for a slightly different flavor. Ken has lots of details and source files here and here and here, or you can download my Beatmaker kit here.

Also, let it be known that technology often fails: Daniel’s app crashed once, and so did mine. Also also, let it be known that the low-end that comes in at about 0:59 rumbled the whole auditorium, including the stage.

Sick dude! I’ve had Beatmaker for several months now, but haven’t devoted much time to it. Maybe it’s time for me to go back :)

You should have had someone call you at the end so it would ring and you could just answer it and walk off stage. That would have been funny.

Awesome Josh! I really liked your mix, yours was definitely dirtier than Ken and Daniel. I really liked the set in Greenville with the tv’s and the trees it looked very clean to show off the counter. The Crane Cam was nice too! Great perspectives and gave a very underground DJ type feel. I do like the idea from Biscuet to get a call and walk off…

I’d say that’s a reflection of our respective core musical tastes. Ken tends towards Daft Punk and Digitalism, I tend towards Justice and The Bloody Beetroots.

You are so creative, Joshua! That was a lot of fun to watch, I wish I could have been there for the low-end rumble.

You know what would have been off the chain?

If, at the conclusion of your performance, you’d have held the iPhone out toward the crowd, and then opened your hand, dropping the device dramatically to the floor.

That would have been off the chain.

Sicky. I’m pretty sure the only time that might ever happen at my Anglican church is if we’re privy to the Resurrection of the Saints.

Tracy, you can see how it played out at the Anderson Campus here. Same set-up happened in Greenville, just with different personnel.
