NY Times Columnist Thinks Twitter is for Bored Celebs and High Schools Girls

Here we find NY Times columnist Maureen Dowd completely unable to keep her seething loathe under wraps while throwing lazy jabs at Twitter founders Evan Williams and Biz Stone (who deftly, without a hint of irony, humbly jab back.) I know it’s an op-ed piece, but just because Dowd doesn’t get Twitter doesn’t mean the rest of us are idiots for finding value in it.

  1. I’m really shocked at the lack of professionalism in Dowd’s interview. I appreciate a good dose of constructive criticism and think debating ideas is critical for advancement, but her line of questioning lacks both tact and a common thread. I realize it’s just a commentary, but it reads more like the kind of flaming we see in online forums where anonymity protects the weak. Honestly, what was the value in asking, “Was there anything in your childhood that led you to want to destroy civilization as we know it?”

  2. The way most celebrities are using Twitter, I don’t necessarily blame her for the knee-jerk. We find value in twitter, because we see and utilize that value. She doesn’t, because all she sees is the Twittering that celebrities do. She should look closer at the rest of us. Maybe then she’ll see the real Twitter.

  3. I want Biz as my friend. I feel we would get along.

I’m more surprised with the logical inerrancies in the reporter’s head. Why isn’t she railing against TV for the drivel that is on 24/7? Newspapers never report on pointless events? Technology has no inherent morality. How someone uses it is dependent on the individual. I guarantee this idiot of a woman is on the front lines when a library puts limits on computer website visitation usage.

This is a similar — although slightly more obvious — version of the argument I get into with churches over new technology. And I don’t want to talk about that.

I looked at some of her other pieces, and I think that sarcastic tone seems to be her M.O.

  5. When did Reba McEntire start writing for the NYT? Never been a fan but I do own her sitcom on Blu-Ray because it’s better than Golden Girls if you’re high on Meth and broke from the child support that was three months late. That shirt is lesbian.
