Buy Something Old

This is officially the best video on YouTube – Frank Sinatra and Antonio Carlos Jobim from a 1967 special called A Man and His Music + Ella + Jobim

Jobim is one of my favorite guitarists, pianists, and composers and one of the founding fathers of the Bossa Nova musical genre. (I’ve been on this Bossa Nova kick lately.) At the time when this special aired, I’m fairly certain Sinatra‘s voice never sounded so relaxed and perfect. There is something real and intimate about the music (especially considering this particular clip was LIVE TV) of the late 60’s that resonates with me, especially in the age of such programmed, synthesized perfection.

You have homework. The next time you go to buy an album, do yourself a favor, skip over the new releases, and hit up something from the past. (Specifically, find Francis Albert Sinatra & Antonio Carlos Jobim if you can… great album.) It will treat you right and, on those perfect days, most likely make you want to glide across the room and know fluent Spanish and be in love. Or maybe that’s just me?
