Sustainable Pop Music

During the commute this morning, Jimmy Eat World’s The Middle assaulted me with all its feel-good pop fury. As I was rocking out in gratitude, my inner dialogue went something like this:

“YES! ROCK!”

“I bet this song has been played on the radio about 12,582,937.314 times over the past 5 years… but WHO CARES? I still love it… I wonder what other recent pop gems are tireless like that? Oooooh… Since You’ve Been Gone never gets old.”

And THEN, citizens of the internet, just then at that very moment in time at 8:55ish on Thursday, December 7, 2006 somewhere near Las Colinas, Texas, The Middle fades into radio-past and, with no pomp, circumstance, or pause for station identification, Ms. Clarkson coos:

“Here’s the thing we started off friends
It was cool but it was all prete-end…”

And I giggled. I honestly did. I straight giggled in the middle of Dallas metroplex traffic. And then I CONTINUED TO ROCK. Oh, the joy of pop music that sticks in your ribs and makes you smile uncontrollably and go all rock drummer on your steering wheel.
