Children of Men is the Best Movie of 2006

I saw Children of Men last night. It is hands-down amazing and you need to go see it in the theater. I intentionally knew very little about the film and I love going into excellent movies with little knowledge of what to expect.

Did I mention it was amazing?

So much of what I loved about it happened in the background (the Banksy and Pink Floyd Animals bits, Picasso’s Guernica, various bits of signage) and the action sequences were such absurdly long takes, but it never felt forced or gimmicky.

The lack of Best Picture nomination is criminal (especially in light of Little Miss Sunshine‘s inclusion – a fine film, but not Best Picture material), but if Children of Men doesn’t take home the cinematography and editing statues, I will lose all faith in the Academy Awards.
